Ring, watch, mat, or mattress cover, the category has matured. This is our current overview of the sleep trackers worth putting on your body or bed.
Apple + AutoSleep / Sleep++
Wrist form factor, accurate enough for trend data, but heavy as a nighttime device. Native Sleep app is basic; third-party apps do the heavy lifting.
Why it made the cut: If you already wear one all day, it's an acceptable entry-level tracker.
Eight Sleep
On-bed, not on-body. Tracks HRV, temperature, and sleep stages from the mattress cover. Pairs with its temperature-regulation hardware.
Why it made the cut: Best option for people who won't wear anything to bed. The intervention + tracking combo is unique.
Fitbit (Google)
Accessible entry point; solid sleep-stage accuracy. Subscription for advanced metrics.
Why it made the cut: Good first tracker for people who don't want to commit to Oura pricing.
Garmin
Strongest battery life in the category; good sleep-stage and HRV data; less polished UX than Oura or Apple.
Why it made the cut: Best for multi-day activities, no nightly charging needed.
Ōura
Ring form factor, independent validation against polysomnography, deep HRV and readiness metrics.
Why it made the cut: Deepest validation record; unobtrusive; durable hardware.
WHOOP
Strap form factor with strong strain/recovery framing. Subscription-bundled hardware.
Why it made the cut: Best for athletes and quantified-self types who care about training-load context alongside sleep.
Withings
Under-mattress sleep pad; no wearable. Lower-fidelity than body-worn but genuinely passive.
Why it made the cut: For people who want sleep data with zero friction and don't need athletic-grade metrics.
